We rescued our sweet Bradley from a horrific situation, in which he was ill and listed for free on craigslist. In the ad, the farmer wrote that Bradley likely had tetanus. We knew that Bradley needed help immediately, but he was hours away from our sanctuary. We reached out to our friends at Stardust Animal Sanctuary, and they kindly agreed to facilitate Bradley’s emergency transport to the University of Wisconsin (UW).
When Bradley arrived at the hospital, he was nervous, bloated, and noticeably in pain. The UW team quickly confirmed a tetanus diagnosis, which they determined was caused by a badly botched castration. Not only had the wound been left to fester, but they fully missed a testicle. To make matters worse, doctors also discovered that Bradley had lockjaw so severe that he could not eat or drink, and they could not insert a tube to relieve his bloat. Bradley was rushed into emergency surgery for a rumenostomy to relieve his bloat and provide nutrition/hydration.
Tetanus is often fatal in cows, as once the illness has progressed to a certain point, antitoxins are typically ineffective. Thankfully, Bradley received emergency medical care just in time, and with lots of love and ‘round the clock care, he made a full recovery!
Bradley is such a gentle, sweet, and curious little soul. He knows his name, and he comes to get scratches around his horns when he is called. We are so happy that we can provide him the life that all cows deserve.

When Bradley arrived at the hospital, he was nervous, painful, and bloated. His team quickly confirmed a tetanus diagnosis, which they determined was caused by a badly botched castration. The castration was so poorly done that they missed a testicle and the wound had been left to fester. Sadly, doctors also discovered that Bradley had lockjaw so severe that he could not eat or drink, and they could not insert a tube to relieve his bloat. Bradley was rushed into emergency surgery for a rumenostomy to relieve his bloat and provide nutrition/hydration.
Tetanus is often fatal in cows, as early signs and symptoms can be easily overlooked, and once the illness has progressed to a certain point, antitoxins are typically ineffective. Thankfully, Bradley received emergency medical care just in time, and with lots of love and ‘round the clock care, he made a full recovery! Bradley is such a gentle, sweet, and curious little soul. He finally has the life that all cows deserve.
