Meet Basil, a sweet goat with a special bond with her sister, Evie.

Basil came to us as a baby, unable to stand on her own. Her legs splayed out beneath her from a condition called Floppy Kid Syndrome, and she couldn’t nurse from a bottle, leaving her without the nutrition she desperately needed. Our vet team got to work right away, and within a couple of days, she was running alongside Evie. A subsequent limp led her back to the vet, where they discovered an umbilical infection had spread to her joints. Basil also fought off an infection from an early ear tag, and though antibiotics cleared it up, the tip of her ear didn’t survive. If you look closely, you can still see the lasting mark.

Basil and Evie needed round-the-clock care while they healed, so they spent six weeks together in a cozy indoor space, calling out for their bottles the moment feeding time was even a couple of minutes late. They outgrew every enclosure built for them and loved trotting up and down staircases, their little hooves echoing through the whole house.

Once they were strong enough, the sisters made the move to the sanctuary for good. Today, they still stick close together, but have also made friends with the rest of their goat cohort, Hazel and Piper, and the group runs around all day together.
