In early August 2020, we received a desperate message to help a 21-day-old piglet who had been found disoriented, injured, and traumatized after jumping from a moving semi on Interstate 80. It’s heartbreakingly common for piglets to jump from semis as they are being transported to finishing facilities. Many piglets don’t survive their freedom jump, but for Lazlo, his leap of faith led to a second chance at life.

By the time we received the message, Lazlo had been safely delivered to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa. Lazlo’s rescue ride was a terrifying experience for his rescuer, as she feared he wouldn’t survive. At one point, he let out a massive sigh while he rested in her lap, and she thought for sure she’d lost him. But actually, it was probably at that very moment that little Lazlo realized he was finally safe, and his tiny body was able to relax.

Today, Lazlo is the living the life that all piglets deserve. He’s free to run, to snuggle, and to bask in the sun. And perhaps greatest of all, he’s free to build relationships with friends that will last a lifetime. Much to our surprise, Lazlo has formed an inseparable bond with Auggie, one of our young cows with special needs. The love that Lazlo and Auggie have for one another is all the evidence we need to know that happily ever after does exist.
